The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) published the official proceedings from the 2017 World
Workshop on the
Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. The proceedings provided
and announced a new
periodontal classification for the AAP Guidelines. A classification scheme for periodontal and
peri‐implant diseases and
conditions is required for dental hygienists to be able to appropriately diagnose and treat
their patients as well as to
allow for researchers to investigate the etiology, pathogenesis, natural history, and treatment
of periodontal diseases.
It is crucial for dental hygienists to have a firm grasp on how to utilize this updated
classification system to
generate an accurate diagnosis, which will ultimately guide the treatment plan proposed for
their patients and
facilitate communication. This presentation will simplify the intricacies of this new
classification to improve
implementation, taking periodontal management of dental patients to the next level.
